Anyone know if this is supported in PHP 4.x, or do I need to upgrade to PHP 5.x, or will it only work on a windows server with the windows version of PHP?

<?php
// starting microsoft word
$word = new COM("word.application") or die("Unable to instantiate Word");
echo "Loaded Word, version {$word->Version}\n";
?>

Thanks.

Your VPS is Linux-based. COM functions are only available for the Windows version of PHP.

You can find more information about com functions and their limitations at:
