Hello here.

I am on a Cobalt server and I'd like to know if I can use https:// (SSL) protocol in order to use secure transactions. If the answer is yes, where I can find such secure directory on the server?

Thank you in advance for any reply.

Sincerely

Fabrizio Ferrari

We do have a shared secure certificate on all of our Cobalt servers. The shared certificate uses the standard 128 bit encryption, but is not signed by a certificate authority and will give a warning to everyone that is accessing the site (though it's still encrypted and secure). For instructions on how to use the shared cert, we'd need a domain name. The URL to access the site via the shared certificate is also listed in your domain's setup email.

If you're looking for a certificate that does not give a warning, then you'd need to have a dedicated IP for your site, then purchase a certificate from one of the various certificate authorities. If you need further help with this process, go ahead and let me know the name of your domain and I can give you more instructions.

BTW, for your certificate authority needs, I'd recommend Comodo certs from www.instantssl.com.

Thank you Dustin for your kind reply.

Of course, I think your suggested site www.instantssl.com is suitable for me. My domain is www.virtualsheetmusic.com and I am wondering if my IP address, 65.103.150.85, is already static... please, let me know.

Please, go ahead and let me know how I can proceed.

Thank you for your kindness again.

My best regards,

Fabrizio Ferrari

Your site does have a dedicated IP and I've enabled SSL. Now you'll need to log into your control panel, click the tab located on the left labeled "SSL Settings", fill out all of the fields, then generate a self signed certificate. Once this is done, you'll notice a section of the "SSL Settings" page labeled "Certificate Request". You'll need to use the text in this section to order a certificate.

Now you'll take the CSR to instantssl.com and use it to purchase a certificate from them.

Once you have the certificate, you'll log into your control, go back to the "SSL Settings" area, and enter the certificate text in the required field.

In the case of Comodo certs, they'll also give you what is called a "rootchain", which will be a series of two or more additional certificates. Just email these rootchain certificates to us and we'll take care of them.
