We've obtained new router software that we believe will resolve the vulnerability that resulted in the network outage two evenings ago.

While Cisco has no public record of this vulnerability, it is resolved in the latest builds of many IOS versions across a wide array of hardware platforms. This was evidenced by routers running newer IOS builds remaining unaffected by the issue that perturbed the vulnerability in older IOS builds.

We don't have a guarantee that this will fix the problem since Cisco doesn't mention this vulnerability anywhere (fixed or otherwise), but we have a high level of confidence that this build does contain the fix since it is the latest available (June 8, 2010) for our IOS version.

We will be performing the upgrade to the IOS software on the router this evening between 5:30PM and 6:00PM June 17, 2010 (GMT -7:00).

We expect between 5 and 10 minutes of network downtime during the router reload and subsequent route stabilization.
